THE CONCEPT OF TIME IN JAPANESE LANGUAGE LINGUISTICS

Abstract

This article analyzes the concept of time and its uniqueness in Japanese culture. The main focus of the research is on the concept of time as an important component of cultural space. According to the results of the research, “time” has a cultural and philosophical meaning, and it can be divided into basic concepts such as natural cycle time, historical time, and psychological time. In Japanese civilization, the meaning of time is manifested in the archaic model of the world formed under the influence of Shintoism and Buddhism, and this finds its expression in the Japanese language culture. Although the concept of time in Japanese culture is mainly based on the periodic model, the combination of linear and periodic models of time is also noticeable. At the same time, for the Japanese, time is expressed in symbolic and visual images and reflects the characteristics of past-oriented cultural systems. In this article, the author analyzes the interaction of factors such as folklore, national traditions, philosophical and religious foundations in the Japanese perception of time, and shows the uniqueness of the concept of “time”.
